CT State Expands Free College Tuition Program

CT State Community College (CT State) has expanded access to free college tuition for fall semester to include prospective students who have recently attended college.

ā€œConnecticutā€™s dedication to offering one of the nationā€™s most comprehensive free tuition programs not only underscores a commitment to breaking down financial barriers but also recognizes the pivotal role education plays in driving our economy and increasing personal prosperity,ā€ said CT State President John Maduko, M.D. ā€œBy equipping more individuals with the skills and knowledge needed for thriving careers, we are collectively shaping a future where every person can pursue their academic aspirations unencumbered by the burden of tuition costs.ā€

Prospective college students still have time to apply and receive free tuition for fall 2024 semester at any of CT Stateā€™s campuses statewide, and can enroll full- or part-time.

The first steps are to apply to CT State Community College at ctstate.edu/apply and complete the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA at FAFSA.gov, selecting CT Stateā€™s 007635 federal school code; there is no separate application to receive the free tuition benefit. Connecticut residents with a CT high school diploma or GED and who register for at least six credits will automatically be eligible for free tuition. Free tuition is an option even if no other financial aid is awarded, as long as funds remain available.

Free Tuition Eligibility at a Glance:

Be a graduate of a public or private Connecticut high school (GED and homeschooled students qualify).

Individuals who attended a college other than CT State or one of its former community colleges in fall 2020 or later without graduating are now eligible.

Fill out a FAFSA form and accept all awards.

Enroll in six credits or more at CT State Community College campuses.

Awards for free community college are made on a space-available basis. Since its inception in fall 2020, more than 22,000 students have received over $45 million for free tuition through the program. To learn more visit www.ctstate.edu/pact. Fall credit classes begin August 29, however early registration is recommended.

The legislation to expand debt-free community college programs to some returning students who began pursuing higher education in fall 2020 or later was passed in 2023 and became effective for fall 2024 semester. The Connecticut General Assembly has allocated $28.5 million in funding for the program for the 2025 fiscal year.

Many CT State degree options offer seamless transfer to the four Connecticut state universities and Charter Oak State College, making it the most affordable path to attain a bachelorā€™s degree in Connecticut. These credits can also be transferred to other public and private schools in Connecticut and throughout the United States.

Services such as free tutoring, mental health and wellness, veterans centers, career services, transportation, and child care, provide students with the support to achieve success.
